Glen Cove Girls Basketball Beats Oyster Bay in Tourney

Big Red advances to finals with win over Oyster Bay.

The Glen Cove girls basketball team showed off their high powered offense and tenacious d against the Lady Baymen in the first round of the Holiday Tournament. Big Red hit multiple outside shots to race to a 33-17 halftime lead. The offensive onslaught continued in the second half as the Big Red won their second game of the season 62-50.

Score: Glen Cove 62, Oyster Bay 50

The Heroes: Four of the Big Red's players scored in double figures in Wednesday nights non-league match-up. Eighth grader McKayla Hernandez had 16 points to lead Glen Cove. Sophomore guard Marcella Applewhaite had 14 points and center Nicole Alexander had 12 points. Junior guard Victoria Durso had 13.

The Turning Point: Big Red held a comfortable lead through most of the game before a mini-run by Oyster Bay in the fourth quarter brought the score to within eight points. The Lady Baymen had multiple layups by forward Joshlyn Grant and guard Stephanie Mattocks. They were not able to close the gap though as Glen Cove was able to run out the clock by slowing their offense down. It was a good strategy as it forced the Lady Baymen to foul to save time.

The Quote: "The girls worked so hard tonight," said coach Gus Sirakis. "It was a great team effort. They attacked on d and we had balanced scoring on the offensive side."

"I'm extremely proud of Tori [Durso]. She put in a really good effort tonight. She had thirteen points. It was a good start to her season," said Sirakis.

The Bottom Line: The Big Red's high powered offense was too much for the Lady Baymen. They scored in a variety of ways, from the outside, underneath the basket and from the free throw line. They got off to a quick start and kept their offense in gear throughout the duration of the game.

Key Stat: Eighth grader McKayla Hernadez had sixteen points to lead Glen Cove to victory in the 6th annual Oyster Bay Holiday tournament.

Who's next: Glen Cove @ Island Trees in the Tournament final on Friday @ 7 p.m.
