Glen Cove Football Beats Roslyn, 47-21

Big Red running game, defense impresses homecoming crowd.

It may have been a social event for most of the crowd at Friday night's homecoming, but it was business as usual for the Glen Cove Big Red football team.

With windy conditions on the field, Big Red rode behind their powerful running game, accounting for all seven touchdowns, as they defeated the Roslyn Bulldogs, 47-21.

Quarterback Will Kassar scored the first of his two rushing touchdowns on a nine-yard to cap off the game's opening drive. It was soon answered by the Bulldogs to tie it up 7-7 with 5:58 left in the first quarter. That was the closest this game would turn out to be as Big Red's ground attack lit up the scoreboard in the first half with four unanswered rushing scored, including two from running back Billy Neice and another from running back Chris Saperstein.

With the game well at hand, Glen Cove head coach Pete Kopecky was able to bring in the second team and saw contributions from back up quarterback Chris Klimaszewski and running back Marlon Hernandez, each accounting for the only two second half scores by Big Red.

Roslyn would have to wait until 11:13 remaining in regulation before smelling the end zone again, but the game was well out of reach, only cutting their deficit to 47-13.

Hero: Any time a team can run the ball at will as Big Red did Friday night, the credit must be given to perhaps the most overlooked members of the team – the offensive line. As cliché as it sounds, if they did not win their respective battles in the trenches, the rest of the offense would have become stagnant.

Quotable: “It was scary in the beginning. It was 7-7 and it shouldn't have been that way,” said Kopecky. “But there were a lot of things that were taking their mind away from playing football, and that's probably why we were where we were.”

Bottom Line: This game was not much of a test for Big Red, who have already played through the tougher portion of their schedule. However, this game solidifies their spot, not at the top of the pack, but as a legitimate contender in the conference.

Key Stat: Big Red's longest scoring drive in the first half was three minutes, 27 seconds. Their quickest – one minute, 12 seconds.
