Gold Martial Arts Hosts Interschool Tournament

Karate event features more than 150 competitors from Long Island and the New York City area.

Gold Martial Arts in Glen Cove recently hosted its second annual Interschool Tournament at the Glen Cove Boys and Girls Club.

The tournament featured 32 state, national and internationally licensed judges and referees and more than 150 competitors from Long Island and the five boroughs of New York City. Participants were awarded medals and trophies for their achievements in the event, which included kids competing in Kata (Forms) and Kumite (Sparring). 

Sensei Hender Alvarado, the institute's owner and chief instructor, was presented with awards from Mayor Ralph Suozzi and New York State Assemblyman Charles Lavine.

"I'm truly honored and privileged by all of the parents, students, volunteers, and sponsors who came forward to support such a wonderful event," Alvarado said.
