Junior League Players Learn Football Basics

Coaches and older players spent evening on the field with Glen Cove youngsters.

hosted a free football clinic now in its second year, bringing area coaches and varsity players together with 85 young members of the Glen Cove City Junior Football League on August 8.

“It’s a win-win situation for everyone. The coaches are happy to donate their time and our players really enjoy working with the younger kids,” said Denise Kiernan, director of athletics, physical education and health for Glen Cove City Schools. “The players enjoy serving as mentors to the little guys and girls, as many of them played in the Junior League themselves. They hone their leadership skills and the kids learn a lot. It’s a great night for everyone involved and we are happy to host it with help from our neighbors at North Shore."

Varsity and junior varsity coaches from Glen Cove and North Shore High School participated in the event.

Attendees ran agility drills, and six stations were set up to teach proper hand-passing, receiving, blocking and tackling techniques.
