PLAYOFFS: Glen Cove Baseball Falls to Garden City

Glen Cove committed six errors against a talented Garden City squad who made them pay in a 15-2 defeat.

The fifth-seeded Glen Cove baseball team was befallen by mental mistakes in their first playoff game Saturday – making six errors, including four in the second inning - falling to fourth-seeded Garden City 15-2.

15 batters came to the plate for the Trojans in the second inning, which was highlighted by a Scott Conetta three run double, and three RBIs by Mike Borges.  The inning was marred by defensive miscues, as the Big Red struggled to catch the ball all inning.

Glen Cove coach Kevin Nolan knows that his team can’t expect to win if they make those kinds of miscues in the playoffs.

“We couldn’t catch the ball today.  You can’t make those errors in the playoffs,” he said. “I think it was a bit of a snowball effect. We started pressing, and they were able to score too many runs against us.”

The Big Red will now play for their season Monday, knowing that a loss ends an otherwise great season.

“We have to just put this one out of our heads,” Nolan said. “We’ve had a good season, and we need to just wipe that one inning out and remember all of the good things we’ve done this season.”

Heroes: James Duff allowed just six base runners in the game for the Trojans, and just one earned run crossed the plate. The top three in Garden City lineup - Frank Cordio, Borges and James Cauchi - combined to go 7-13 with eight runs and 4 RBI to set the table for the rest of the team.

Will Kassar threw four shutout innings in relief for the Big Red, and Jabbar Morales hit a home run to left in the third inning.

Turning Point:  When Bobby MacDonald stepped onto the mound in the second inning after allowing three runs in the first, he had no way of knowing his defense would let him down.  The Trojans took advantage of the defensive indifference and put 12 runs on the board, putting the game out of reach.  MacDonald finished the game after allowing 15 runs (nine earned).

Quotable: “We had some real good at bats in that inning, and we got some big hits,” Garden City coach Rich Smith said. “We forced them to make some plays that they couldn’t, and we were really able to break down their defense.”

Key Stat: MacDonald finished the game after allowing 15 runs (nine earned), 13 hits, one walk, and recorded one strikeout.

Bottom Line: The Big Red will have one game to get the ship righted, as they will play for their season on Monday.
