Soccerfest Repurposed as 'Lift Our Spirits Community Day'

Glen Cove Jr. Soccer program to host season finale day of fun where canned goods will be collected for local families affected by storm.

This year's Soccerfest will serve as a chance to have some fun in the wake of unprecedented storm damage and help out those most affected by it, according to the city's Department of Parks and Recreation.

Rechristened "Lift Our Spirits Community Day," the event is scheduled for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at City Stadium. Players will have the opportunity to play their last games and enjoy a barbecue which is open to all members of the community.

"It will be a day of appreciation to club members and to the entire community," said Parks and Recreation director Darcy Belyea in an email.

Participation trophies intended for the Soccerfest tournament will be given out after each game.

Games rescheduled after Hurricane Sandy for Nov. 7 and 9 were cancelled. Coaches will be contacting players directly with Saturday's schedule information.

The league will accept canned goods to be distributed to local families affected by the storm.
