Dramatic Reading of 'Wonder' Set for Nearby Library

Members of a Plainview-based theater group will present key scenes from the Oyster Bay's "One Town, One Book" selection,"Wonder" in a dramatic reading and discussion Thursday night.

Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia announced the event will take place Thursday beginning at 7 p.m. at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Library on Old Country Road.

The event is free and open to residents town wide.

Members of The Patio Players, sponsored by the Men's Club of thePlainview Jewish Center, have prepared a dramatic reading of key sections of the novel by R.J. Palacio. The book, now a New York Times bestseller, tells the story of a fifth grader with a severe facial deformity. Readers get insights into his world and through the reactions of his new schoolmates.

The audience will be able to interact with the players in the cast, and a discussion will follow. The event is the library's auditorium.

Even if you haven't read the book, Alesia is encouraging people to come to the performance. The stage adaptation does not reveal the book's ending.

A panel of town librarians and the Town of Oyster Bay chose Palacios's "Wonder" for this year's town-wide summer reading project.

Spearheaded here by Plainview's Alesia, the national movement seeks to challenge communities to read the same book and discuss it with friends and families. Last year's selection was the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic "The Great Gatsby."
