Town Rec, Athletic Programs Cancelled

Also, lifeguard hours extended at some beaches.

A continuing heatwave prompted Town of Oyster Bay officials to extend swimming and lifeguarding hours and cancel several programs Wednesday.

Lifeguard and Spray Park hours were extended to 6 p.m. at Tobay Beach, according to the town's website.

Officials also cancelled all TOBAY recreation programs Wednesday and prohibited all outside athletic activities from 12:30-7 p.m. at Town facilities.

TOBAY Dog and Skate Parks were closed Wednesday, but nearby beached and pools were kept open.

All other Town facilities kept regular hours.

The area is due for "hazardous weather," according to the National Weather Service, which reported temperatures spiking above 100 degrees by the end of the week.
