Mangano's Mismanagement Results in Higher Taxes

Overly Generous Assessment Reductions Force Rise in School Taxes

For the second year in a row, when Nassau residents open their mail this week they will see a steep increase in their school tax bills, much higher than originally projected, because of Ed Mangano’s mismanagement of the assessment system.

“Ed Mangano tries to pull the wool over our eyes by telling us that he hasn't raised taxes," said Suozzi. "However, anyone who looks at their tax bill will clearly see that Mangano is not being truthful."

Mangano says he has fixed Nassau’s complex assessment system, but his mismanagement of the system has made it worse than it’s ever been.  Mangano's biggest failings are artificially high reductions and reductions to almost 90% of those filing a challenge, the dysfunctional and poorly staffed commercial assessment department and the freezing of the assessments.

“Mangano gave away unwarranted reductions like it was candy on Halloween and now over two-thirds of property owners who didn’t challenge are paying huge tax increases to pick up the slack,” said Suozzi.  “This isn’t just an ambiguous academic connection; it’s a fact that the failed policies of Ed Mangano have caused people’s taxes to go up.”

The only ones that benefit from the current broken system are the tax cert law firms who reap the profits and in turn contribute heavily to Mangano’s campaign and have been blatant in their support for his re-election.

“The residents who grieve have to pay as much as half of their reduction to tax cert firms, who in turn pump money into Mangano’s campaign,” said Suozzi. "This is just another blatant example of Mangano's cronies profiting while Nassau residents suffer."

Suozzi pledged that when he takes office one of his first actions would be to end the ongoing lawsuit with Nassau school districts over the repeal of the county guaranty.  Raising school taxes to cover up the county’s mismanagement is no way to solve the problem.

“We need to fix our assessment system once and for all, and we need to do it better than Ed Mangano's dismal record that has resulted in higher taxes and added to the county's fiscal crisis,” said Suozzi.

"When you get your tax bill in the mail, be sure to say, 'Thank you, Ed Mangano for raising my taxes," said Howard Weitzman, candidate for Nassau County Comptroller.  "Ed Mangano and George Maragos pledged to improve the assessment system, and instead they broke it, causing tax bills to jump for most taxpayers."

Appearing alongside Suozzi and Weitzman were members of Nassau County School Boards, including former County Executive candidate Adam Haber and others.
