Suozzi: Mangano has shown no leadership on Recovery, Climate Change Post-Sandy

PRESS RELEASE:

One year later, Mangano’s administration still has no database of victims and no plan for the future

Long Beach, NY- One year after Sandy, Nassau is still recovering -- and residents are blaming the County for mismanaging the recovery process.

Tom Suozzi today stood with representatives from the Long Beach City Council as well as members of the New York League of Conservation Voters and the Long Island Environmental Voters Forum as they criticized County Executive Ed Mangano for his lack of action in the wake of Supertstorm Sandy.

“It has been nearly one year since Superstorm Sandy crippled the City of Long Beach and seaside communities like it,” said Suozzi. “A year later, thousands of displaced residents are still not home. Ed Mangano has failed to create a comprehensive list or comprehensive list of displaced persons and has not developed a detailed Hazard Mitigation Plan like New York City has. We are left with no concrete plan of attack for the next time we are struck by an event of Sandy’s magnitude.”

“Tea Party extremist Ed Mangano needs to come to terms with the realities of Global Climate Change,” concluded Suozzi, who also noted that the City of Long Beach has partnered extensively with the Federal Government to help rebuild Long Beach, but Mangano’s administration has been largely absent.

"We recognize the importance of having a strong partner in Nassau County, and we know that Tom Suozzi shares our vision,” said Long Beach City Council President Scott Mandel.   “This City Council has worked hard in Long Beach to rebuild stronger, smarter, and safer -- we're undertaking a variety of resiliency measures, ranging from beach & bay protection with Army Corps of Engineers projects to hardening our infrastructure and the rebuilding of our brand new, durable boardwalk.”

The New York State League of Conservation Voters issued their formal endorsement of Suozzi at this event, citing his commitment to the future in their announcement. “Tom Suozzi has been a true environmental champion for Nassau County,” said New York League of Conservation Voters President Marcia Bystryn. “We are particularly impressed with his plans to make climate resiliency and emergency mitigation top strategies for his administration. Because of his extensive track record and commitment to an even greener, stronger Nassau, we are proud to endorse Tom Suozzi for County Executive.”

“Protecting Long Island’s environment requires appreciation and vision.  Tom Suozzi understands Long Island’s environment and is planning for its future.  That’s why the Long Island Environmental Voters Forum has endorsed him for re-election,” said Dick Amper, Chairman of the Long Island Environmental Voters Forum.
