Geraldo Rivera Golf and Tennis Classic to Return to the City

Glen Cove country club to host Life's WORC's 23rd annual fundraising event.

On May 10, Life's WORC annual Geraldo Rivera Golf and Tennis Classic will return to Glen Cove for its 23rd annual fundraiser. The event will be held at the Nassau Country Club on St. Andrews Lane.

This year, Life's WORC, a private, not-for-profit social service agency that provides comprehensive support for people with developmental disabilities including mental retardation and autism, will honor Fordham University basketball coach Tom Pecora and Dr. Sean Cotter, founder of Liberty Wellness and Chrio. Both honorees, Life's WORC officials said, will be recognized for their volunteerism and dedication to improving their communities.

"We look to recognize individuals with a long history of contributing to the community; the health and well-being of local residents and our overall quality of life," Peter Smergut, the organization's president, said in a statement. "Both of our honorees exemplify this tradition and we are proud to be honoring them at one of our most important annual events."

And a whole list of events are scheduled this year to make the organization's 23rd Anniversary celebration a memorable one.

The classic will begin with a breakfast buffet at 10:30 a.m., followed by registration for golf and tennis. Tennis and the golf (shotgun start) will kickoff at 12:30 p.m. There will be a grill station served at the Half Way House with snacks and refreshments at Tees 1 and 4/15. Then the cocktail reception, awards ceremony and dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m..

Golf for a single is $500; the foursome fee is $2,000, with a one complimentary tee sign. Tennis for a single is $175. These fees are inclusive of the breakfast, lunch, cocktail reception and dinner. For those who would like to attend the cocktail reception and dinner only, the fee is $125. The event will feature raffle and a silent auction as well.

While people are encouraged to partake in the festivities, the organization welcomes donations all-year around, and no contribution is too small in this struggling economy, said Matthew Zebatto, the assistant executive director of development and public affairs for Life's WORC.

"We accept donations all the time," Zebatto said. "It's doesn't matter how small the donation is, it all adds up. Five hundred dollars may be too steep for some, so people can send in what they can."

Life's WORC is also currently accepting corporate sponsorships in the following categories: Golf - $5,000; Cocktail Reception - $2,500; Golf Cart - $2,000; Luncheon - $1,500; Awards - $1,000; Driving Range - $750 and Tennis Court - $500. There are also opportunities to support the event with Tee Signs - $100 and Brick by Brick Tee Signs - $150.

Today, 39 years since its inception, Life's WORC manages 36 homes and 14 community-based programs throughout Nassau, Suffolk and Queens counties.
