Glen Cove Notebook: Hospital Cares for Patients During Irene

The Glen Cove Hospital provided patient care services during the storm; Mayor's Snapper Derby rescheduled for Sept. 17.

In the days leading up to Hurricane Irene, , as well as the hospitals and facilities of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, established a safe haven for more than 5,000 patients in the New York metropolitan area, according to a news release.

Healthcare workers at North Shore-LIJ helped evacuate more than 1,000 patients from facilities in flood-prone areas, stated the release.

In the aftermath of the storm, Glen Cove Hospital and many North Shore-LIJ facilities were running on back-up power and without air conditioning, but continued to care for patients, according to Joshua Strugatz, the hospital’s associate executive director and operations chief during the storm.

“Because of advanced planning, and the availability of on-site fuel supplies, Glen Cove Hospital remained operational,” said Strugatz.

“This was truly a team effort,” said Barbara Keber, MD, associate program director for Glen Cove Hospital’s Family Medicine Residency Program, and the medical liaison coordinating services throughout the storm. “We were able to triage and admit an extraordinary number of patients in a short time with good coordination of effort and concern and care for the transferred patients.”
