The chose Jericho High School freshman Alley Wolff, 15, as its "Upstander of the Month" for April, the center announced last week.
Wolff was first noticed by the center last year when she was still in middle school. As a member of one of the few Gay-Straight Alliances that exist in Long Island's middle schools, she introduced a campaign called "I Stand Up" to recognize students who have taken action against intolerance.
Wolff is now co-president of the GSA in her high school. She also serves as the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Huntington's youth envoy to the organization's United Nations office, where she "works across borders to expand human rights, end human trafficking and support education and health care initiatives around the world," the center said.
She has also been involved in the Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative, a collaboration between more than 35 congregations in the township which provides a pick-up service for anyone in need of shelter for the night.
