Lifelong City Resident Becomes a Firefighter

Meet one of the new volunteers in Glen Cove.

The Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department recently announced that resident Peter Solomito is a new firefighter for the city. Solomito is a lifelong city resident and a graduate of Glen Cove High School.

Solomito, 18, began his work at the department by participating in its Explorers Junior Firefighters program for more than four years where he learned a wide-range of firefighting techniques. While volunteering in the program, Solomito was elected to rank of captain.

Volunteering at the department is also something that runs in Solomito's family. The young city resident's grandfather, Eugene McGuire, is a 45- year member of the department, and his father, Joseph, is a 23- year member. Both residents also served as chief of the department and Joseph is currently the department's 2nd assistant chief.
