They Want to Walk Because They Care

Hundreds expected to exercise at Glen Cove's Morgan Park on Sunday to raise awareness about skin cancer prevention.

Glen Covers and other local leaders are slated to put on their sunscreen and exercise at Morgan Park on Sunday as participants in the annual Glen Cove C.A.R.E.S. Walk. This year's themes are sun safety and skin cancer prevention and it is entitled, Walk Because We Care.

The event, organizers said, is more of an awareness initiative than a fundraiser. Participants will walk a path in the park that is about a mile and a half long.

The non-profit organization, which is dedicated to raising awareness about the prevention and early detection of cancer, was founded in 1996 by the late Terry Petikas, who was a breast cancer survivor. Petikas died in 2002, but her son and husband still serve on the organization's Board of Directors.

Since its inception, Glen Cove C.A.R.E.S has grown to include fundraising for research and giving direct aid to patients in treatment. The group has donated to Ronald McDonald House, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories and groups.

The organization also recently helped fund a support group for children with a parent who has been diagnosed with cancer. This group was started by the North Shore Child and Family Guidance, which is in Roslyn Heights.

"We help anyone in the greater Glen Cove area," said Maryanne Driscoll, the organization's president. "We don't make much money on the walk. It's really to provide education on sun safety and skin cancer prevention. We walk to bring out the community to come together in a positive way. To learn prevention and to take care of yourself."

Registration for the walk begins at 8:30 a.m. and it starts at 9 a.m. The cost is $20 for adults and $10 for students. Children 4 and under are free. T-shirts will be given away and there will be food and music to round out the day.
