The Weekender: Jazz, Film and Classical Music

The weekend offers a tribute to local jazz legend, cinema, classical music and more. Here are some of the highlights. 

Saturday, 5 p.m. A tribute to legendary jazz musician, Marian McPartland. Port Washington Public Library, Landmark on Main Street, NPR, the Long Island Music Hall of Fame and Marian McPartland's family to come together to mark this occasion and celebrate her life. The event features Jon Weber, pianist and new host of NPR's Piano Jazz, and clips from “In Good Time,” a film about Marian McPartland's life will be shown by the filmmaker. The evening will also feature performances by young jazz performers. One young performer will receive a scholarship stipend from the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. Saturday, 7 p.m. A Doo Wop Extravaganza features Lou Christie, Jimmy Beaumont and the Skyliners,Charlie Thomas' Drifters, The Happenings, The Coasters, The Marcells and more. Sunday, 1 p.m. See “Kings Park: Stories from an American Mental Institution,”a documentary about the history and legacy of the Kings Park State Mental Hospital by filmmaker and former patient Lucy Winer.
