Outgoing chief honored by mayor and others for leadership of department over last two years.
More than 250 people gathered at the Waterview Club in Bayville on January 14 for the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department's annual installation dinner, where mayor Ralph Suozzi swore in a new chief and slate of officers. Ex-chief Anthony Tripp welcomed incoming chief Rodni Leftwich, who was installed along with first assistant chief Joseph Solomito, Jr., second assistant chief Philip Grella, Jr., third assistant chief Robert Marino, recording secretary Thomas Kenary, corresponding secretary William Bastavanos and treasurer Gilbert Tanaka. Suozzi was joined in praising Tripp's service by state senator Carl Marcellino, assemblyman Charles Lavine, Nassau County executive Ed Mangano and Oyster Bay town councilwoman Beth Faughnan.

Some of the crimes reported around Long Island this week. Mineola A Mineola man was sentenced to 7 years in federal prison Friday on charges of trading child pornography over the internet. Michael Hopkins, 25, pleaded guilty to the charges in U.S. District Court in Central Islip and still faces charges of allegedly raping a 14-year-old Suffolk girl he met on the internet. While Hopkins allegedly did not coerce the girl to have sex with him, she is legally under the age of consent of 15. Hopkins has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors said that Hopkins had been trading the images online for the past 8 years. According to authorities, Hopkins was originally arrested in 2010 on the pornography charges which led to the discovery of the alleged …

Police say pair demanded money from 2 skateboarders.
Two teenagers were arrested and accused of trying to rob youngsters who were skateboarding in Sea Cliff Friday night. Nassau County Sixth Squad detectives said that Benjamin Molina, 16, of Woodbury and Helder Molina, 18, of Glen Cove demanded money and property from two 13-year-olds who were skateboarding on Sea Cliff Avenue. When one refused, police said, Benajamin Molina punched him in the eye. Both of the suspects then fled, empty-handed, in a 1995 Toyota. Police said Helder Molina surrendered to police at 10:06 p.m. and Benjamin Molina was arrested at his home at 10:30 p.m. Both defendants are charged with second-degree robbery and second-degree assault and were arraigned Saturday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Reviving a 4-pound newborn is part of his daily job and volunteer service.
In his regular job, Robert Roper rescues people in need of assistance. In his spare time, he rescues people in need of assistance. Roper, who has been a medical technician with the Nassau County Ambulance service for 18 years, has been a volunteer with the Glenwood Fire Company for 24 years so helping people is not something new. But one of his more recent and arguably bigger rescues came Tuesday when he was summoned by a report of a woman giving birth at her home in Westbury, a section of Nassau County to which he’s been assigned for the last seven years. “We received a call about a woman who’d just given birth. Baby revived after breathing stops.
A Nassau County medical technician from Glen Head saved a newborn baby who had stopped breathing Tuesday morning. Third Precinct Police said that two officers responded to a call about a woman giving birth in Westbury at 9:16 a.m. Tuesday. When they arrived, they found a woman, who was 40 years old, had just delivered a baby boy but he was not breathing and was motionless. The pair, identified as Officers Cooper and Atkin, began providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Ambulance medical technician Robert Roper arrived, cut the cord and continued life-saving measures as the baby wa taken to Nassau University Medical Center. Glen Cove department works with 2 county precincts.
In an effort to cut back on spending, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and Police Commissioner Thomas Dale announced Monday that the eight police precincts will merge into four. Four precincts will remain intact while the remaining for will be transformed into new Community Policing Centers, Mangano said. According to a release from the county, the Second Precinct in Woodbury, Third Precinct in Williston Park, Fourth Precinct in Hewlett and Seventh Precinct in Seaford will continue to operate as regular precincts, while the First Precinct in Baldwin, Fifth Precinct in Elmont, Sixth Precinct in Manhasset and Eighth Precinct in Levittown will become community policing centers.
