Glen Cove Fans Cheer on the Giants

Local residents among huge crowds who turn out for Super Bowl parade.

Glen Cove residents were among the hundreds of thousands who turned out Tuesday to cheer on the New York Giants at their Super Bowl victory parade.  They lined the streets of the Canyon of Heroes in Lower Manhattan tossed footballs to their favorite players, danced salsa steps, waved signs and cheered mightily as  the NFL champs rode to City Hall where they were awarded keys to the city. "It was awesome, we saw all the players we like: Tuck, Manning holding the trophy, Ballard. it was a good time to celebrate the Giants victory," said John Macchione from Glen Cove. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other dignitaries joined the parade and City Hall festivities before the Giants left for another party at MetLife Stadium…

Making Plans for Super Bowl Sunday

Are you ready to party or are you going to avoid the whole thing?

People are rushing about, buying snacks and other food for Super Bowl parties. Others are making plans to head out to local bars or restaurants to cheer on the New York Giants. What are you planning? Is there too much hype? Or are you ready to join the festivities? And if you're a Jets fan, what are you doing?

1. The Board of Education is holding a special meeting at 6:30 tonight at Thayer House. 2. Businesses and organizations are invited to claim their Patch listings. If you're in our directory and have a job opening, let us know. We'll add it to our weekly story about hiring. 3. Youngsters in  grades 2-4 are invited to a reading and discussio of Grandfather's Gold Watch at 4:15 p.m. at the Glen Cove Public Library. 4. If you didn't read it yesterday, check out our report on Glen Cove Hospital's Heart Health fair. 5. It's sports night at two schools tonight at 7, Gribbin Grade 2 and Landing Grade 4.

Town Honors Hockey Pioneer Willie O'Ree

Oyster Bay honors Canadian who broke the NHL's color line in 1958.

Hockey pioneer Willie O’Ree, the first black man to play in the National Hockey League, was honored by the Town of Oyster Bay last week. Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto proclaimed Jan. 18, as ‘Willie O’Ree Day’ in the Town of Oyster Bay, to commemorate the 53rd anniversary of O'Ree's  breaking of the color barrier in the NHL. On Jan. 18, 1958, while playing for the Boston Bruins against the Montreal Canadiens, O’Ree became the first black man to play in the NHL. At the time, O'Ree's entree into the NHL was an extraordinary event that paved the way for future players of diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds. A quarter century would pass before another black man played for an NHL team. O'Ree played in only two games, in 1958, before …

The Patriots were 18-0 when they faced the New York football Giants in Super Bowl XLII. They ended up 18-1 Worse than the 1986 CHOKE of the Boston Red Sox vs the Mets.
