Shelter Animals of the Week: Triscuit and Nabisco

Triscuit and Nabisco are two adoptable kittens who are “deliciously” irresistible.

Triscuit and Nabisco are two, precious Domestic Short Hair kittens who are in desperate need of a loving new home. These playful siblings are new arrivals to the Glen Cove Animal Shelter. They were recently dropped-off, along with their mom, and put up for adoption. Although skittish at times from the sudden change in their lives, this dynamic duo is very playful and sweet. They get along very well with one another; their interactions are irresistible to watch. Although similar-looking, they each have unique markings and colors. In addition to a striped, light-brown/beige coat, Triscuit has a patch of white fur just above her nose and Nabisco’s body is lighter in color. Their delicious names, combined with such endearing personalities, …

Shelter Animal of the Week: Daisy

Daisy's delightful nature and curiosity is simply irresistible.

Daisy is one of many adorable teenage Domestic Short Hair cats currently available for adoption at the Glen Cove Animal Shelter. Not to be confused with Princess Daisy (who has quite a big personality), Daisy is a little more subdued. However, she always seems to make an appearance over the course of each shelter visit, as if she whole-heartedly wants to be noticed. Usually, she slinks around close by and observes. Daisy is as sweet as her name, and gets along well with other cats due to her pleasant nature. She has a medium build with a black and white coat, surplus of white whiskers and an amazing set of light green eyes. This patient girl awaits a loving family that will appreciate her delightful personality. Hopefully on a visit in the…

Shelter Animal of the Week: Desi

This beautiful white cat is a triple threat: wise, witty and wonderful.

To many, the appeal of a kitten is much greater than that of a teenage or adult cat. But, as seen in previously featured pets, these animals have a lot to offer and deserve loving homes just as much as kittens do. The Glen Cove Animal Shelter houses dozens of great teenage and adult cats. Each has his or her own distinct personality and physical characteristics. However, few come close to possessing the unmistakable beauty of Desi. This handsome fellow’s stunning white coat truly makes him stand out from the majority of darkly-colored cats. He is a medium-large size, 100 percent huggable and loves people. He can usually be found greeting guests while sitting atop the front desk, or resting inside of his favorite toy: a soft, climbable …

Shelter Animal of the Week: Winnie

Winnie is a young mommy who longs to be adopted like her three kittens.

Winnie is a young and adorable Domestic Short Hair who longs to be adopted just like the rest of her family. She and her three kittens were left in a shoddy cardboard box in the middle of the Glen Cove Animal Shelter’s parking lot, located on Shore Rd. Winnie has not yet reached the age of one, according to shelter staff, which makes her a very young mommy. Her kittens were adopted almost immediately after entering the shelter. “She’s such a good girl,” said Jessica, a shelter volunteer. Winnie has long, pointy ears, bright yellow/green eyes, and gorgeous black stripes. Be sure to give this high-spirited, playful little girl plenty of attention. She loves to be held. If you are interested in adopting Winnie, or any other cats or dogs at …

Shelter Animals of the Week: Tommy and Judy

Meet the softest, most adorable pair of Tabby cats who are waiting to be adopted.

Tommy and Judy are pure breed American Short Hair cats, or classic Tabbys, and are patiently waiting for a new owner to adopt them. The breeder who formerly cared for the siblings passed away. They were then brought to the Glen Cove Animal Shelter by a local veterinarian, knowing they would be in good hands until someone falls in love with them.  What makes American Short Hairs different from the Domestic Short Hairs featured in previous weeks are the face shape and eyes. These adorable felines have a more rounded face, and big, circular green eyes. They are remarkably beautiful animals. Both Tommy and Judy have a light brown coat with dark brown stripes, and a pink nose. Their “luxurious” and soft-feeling coat is part of their charm, …

Shelter Animal of the Week: Princess Daisy

With her big personality, and gorgeous coat, Princess Daisy could make the perfect girlfriend companion.

Princess Daisy is a gorgeous Domestic Short Hair cat, and a fairly new addition to the Glen Cove Animal Shelter. She is currently awaiting a person or family to fall in love with her and bring her home. As her name implies, this feline has quite the personality. She loves sitting in the sun, greeting visitors as they come through the door. She is also a big fan of climbing, and playing with her toys. Princess Daisy has several nicknames, including “Daisy Dukes.” She has a black and orange-speckled, or tortoise shell, coat, green eyes and a mostly black tail. Her feet are also different colors.  Like many of the previous cats featured, Princess Daisy is also an adult cat, but not mature. She has lots of spunk and attitude. She could make …

Shelter Animal of the Week: Bear

Bear is a big and lovable cat who is the perfect companion to cuddle with.

Bear is a big and lovable Domestic Short Hair cat who is ready to be taken home by a loving family. Soon after he was abandoned, Bear was brought to the Glen Cove Animal Shelter. It has been his home since last spring. He is a very sweet and lovable boy who likes to get his belly rubbed. He is an adult cat, but not mature. Shelter staff approximated his age around five years-old. Bear has a gorgeous, shiny black coat and bright yellow/green eyes. Similar to Cookie, who was another black cat featured two weeks ago, Bear has faint white markings above both of his eyes. However, this guy has a white tuft under his chin, and a small white tip on his tail. He moves very swiftly for a larger-sized cat. He is playful, very sweet, and with all …

Shelter Animal of the Week: Frannie

Frannie is a mature dog who is young at heart and patiently waiting to be adopted.

The Glen Cove Animal Shelter is currently housing eight year-old Frannie, who is a medium-sized Labrador and German Shepherd mix. She was found in early 2010 wandering along Shore Road, where the shelter is located. Since her discovery, no one has claimed her. Although she may be an older dog, Frannie is really a teenager at heart. She is very vivacious for her age and full of pep. She loves playing fetch, and getting lots of attention. Her terrific people skills were nicely demonstrated during a long walk outside. Frannie’s behavior was pleasant and obedient while greeting visitors to the shelter. “She’s a very adoptable dog,” said Mike, the kennel manager. Frannie is a beautiful dark brown color with dark brown eyes, ears and nose, and …

Shelter Animal of the Week: Cookie

The Glen Cove Animal Shelter cares for many older cats, like Cookie. Although she's got some years on her, this lovely feline has plenty of spunk.

Cookie is a Domestic Short Hair who was surrendered quite a while ago. She is one of the many older felines the Glen Cove Animal Shelter is currently caring for. However, her energy and playfulness makes it hard for visitors to believe she is already seven years old. She is a very sweet cat, and her good-natured demeanor is hard to ignore. She is a medium size with a black coat. What makes Cookie unlike every other black cat are the light gray, almost white, circular markings just above her large green eyes. Garfield, who was featured in December, was in the same clan as Cookie and both entered the shelter at the same time. The previous owners could not care for them anymore. Shelter staff highly encourages dual adoptions for cats, …

Shelter Animal of the Week: Kelly

Kelly is full of personality, and has a very interesting physical trait.

Kelly is a five month-old Domestic Short Hair with lots to say. She will call you right over to her cage! The Glen Cove Animal Shelter staff believes she is part Siamese, since that particular breed tends to be more vocal. But there is one other characteristic of Kelly that makes even more unique: she has six toes on each of her front paws, making them appear like little mittens. This makes her a polydactyl cat, which means she has more than the normal amount of toes. Cats who have genetically inherited this trait are most commonly found along the East Coast of the United States and in South West England. If a cat is polydactyly, is it sometimes called a "Hemingway cat" or simply "Hemingway" because of the famous author's love of these …
