Glen Cove Football Beats Roslyn, 47-21

Big Red running game, defense impresses homecoming crowd.

It may have been a social event for most of the crowd at Friday night's homecoming, but it was business as usual for the Glen Cove Big Red football team.  With windy conditions on the field, Big Red rode behind their powerful running game, accounting for all seven touchdowns, as they defeated the Roslyn Bulldogs, 47-21. Quarterback Will Kassar scored the first of his two rushing touchdowns on a nine-yard to cap off the game's opening drive. It was soon answered by the Bulldogs to tie it up 7-7 with 5:58 left in the first quarter. That was the closest this game would turn out to be as Big Red's ground attack lit up the scoreboard in the first half with four unanswered rushing scored, including two from running back Billy Neice and another …

Glen Cove Football Falls to Lawrence, 46-26

Big Red blows third quarter lead to lose third game of the season.

It was a tale of two halves for the Glen Cove football team Saturday night as they fell to the Lawrence Golden Tornado, 46-26.  In the first half, Glen Cove dominated both time of possession and the line of scrimmage against a top-seeded Golden Tornado team that featured the three-headed runningback tandem of the Fredericks trio. Keeping the offense basic by rarely putting the ball in the air, Big Red found themselves trailing only 14-13 going into halftime thanks to two rushing touchdowns by quarterback Will Kassar. Facing a deficit of only one point, the momentum of this game was clearly held by the Big Red sideline. Building on that, they opened up the third quarter with an 83-yard drive, capped off by a touchdown pass from Kassar to …

Glen Cove Football Beats Sewanhaka, 35-28

Glen Cove rallies from behind late to pick up first win of season.

It took the Glen Cove football team just over 44 minutes to capture its first lead of the day Saturday, but that was all Big Red needed to knock off the Sewanhaka Indians, 35-28. In their first home game this year, Big Red (1-2) showed a resiliency that it has exhibited in each game so far. Despite the defense giving up 20 first-half points, quarterback Will Kassar's four-touchdown performance helped propel his team to its first victory of the season. “They knew they could beat this team,” Coach Pete Kopecky said. “They were excited because they knew that they were big, that everything was as advertised but the kids knew that [the Indians] are going to slow down because their guys go both ways and our guys go one way so it worked to our …

Volleyball: Glen Cove's 2011 Preview

Glen Cove volleyball is looking to take a big step forward in 2011.

In very few instances, a high school team can talk about addition by subtraction. But for the Glen Cove Big Red volleyball team, that is exactly what has happened for their 2011 season. Despite three key seniors from last year's team graduating, there are six seniors on the roster for the current year, five of them being starters. That includes captains Meghan O'Connell and Alison Baade. While it is definitely a luxury to have that kind of experience on a roster, head coach Matthew Carbone works closely with Junior Varsity coach Amanda Sullivan, seeking a player to step up and show that they can be a leader after this group of seniors graduate. “Our sophomore setter Abby Olsen…needs to step up in that role,” said Carbone. “If she is going …

Football: Glen Cove's 2011 Preview

Making the playoffs is a stated goal for Big Red.

There is little time to waste for the Glen Cove Big Red football team. While they may have a fairly inexperienced group of skill players, that doesn't change the fact that Glen Cove opens up the year with a few tough games. No one player will be more affected by the tough beginning than quarterback Will Kassar. The junior is entering his first season as a starter, having only a few weeks of late summer practice to prepare for the large undertaking. "He's going to have to get over the jitters in the first few games because we have an incredibly tough schedule," said Head coach Pete Kopecky of Kassar. "He’s going to have to learn quickly on the job." Last Season: 5-3, lost to Lawrence in the first round of the playoffs. Head Coach: Pete …

PLAYOFFS: Glen Cove Baseball Falls to Garden City

Glen Cove committed six errors against a talented Garden City squad who made them pay in a 15-2 defeat.

The fifth-seeded Glen Cove baseball team was befallen by mental mistakes in their first playoff game Saturday – making six errors, including four in the second inning - falling to fourth-seeded Garden City 15-2. 15 batters came to the plate for the Trojans in the second inning, which was highlighted by a Scott Conetta three run double, and three RBIs by Mike Borges.  The inning was marred by defensive miscues, as the Big Red struggled to catch the ball all inning. Glen Cove coach Kevin Nolan knows that his team can’t expect to win if they make those kinds of miscues in the playoffs. “We couldn’t catch the ball today.  You can’t make those errors in the playoffs,” he said. “I think it was a bit of a snowball effect. We started pressing, and…
