New Legislation Closes Animal Abuse Loopholes

Kathleen Rice introduces stricter laws against animal cruelty, pump jail time for offenders.

Animal cruelty could carry longer prison sentences and larger fines, according to new legislation introduced by Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice at Glen Cove Animal Lover's League Tuesday. "This is what we've been waiting for," said Animal Lover's League volunteer and cofounder Joan Phillips. "I have so much admiration for all those who worked on the legislation. It's very comprehensive…and introduces more effective means of prosecuting." The new legislation, cosponsored by Sen. Charles Fuschillo, R-Merrick, and Assemb. Linda Rosenthal, D-Manhattan, would shift crimes of animal cruelty to the penal code, pumping jail sentences and enhancing penalties for repeat offenders. Acts like dog fighting, animal cruelty, and injuring police …

On Glen Cove

What Are You Thankful For?

Glen Cove Patch Editor Elena DiMarco reflects on what she is grateful for in 2011.

What are you thankful for? It is a question I ask myself every Thanksgiving. With each passing year, the question takes on new meaning. For example, in second grade - and after persistent begging - I was thankful my parents allowed me to have a pet hamster, who I named Ruby. In high school, I was grateful I passed my Chemistry Regents (by a few points, I might add). In college, I felt extremely privileged to have formed an incredible group of lifelong friends. Today, I have more to be grateful for than ever before: I have a job that allows me to interact with a community that is not only rich in history, but also chock-full of interesting, hard-working and selfless individuals. There are so many people in our city worth being thankful for…

'Caged Cats' Treated for Serious Conditions in Glen Cove

Several of the rescued cats contracted FIV, a virus causing feline AIDS.

The cats discovered at Sands Point Preserve on Monday, Nov. 14, were treated for serious medical ailments by the Glen Cove Animal Lovers League (ALL) on Sunday. Local animal care physicians determined that some of the cats had contracted feline immunodeficiency virus, or FIV, which causes feline AIDS. Between 2.5 and 4.4 percent of cats worldwide are infected with FIV, which is said to be closely related to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The virus can be transmitted if the infected cat’s saliva enters another cat’s bloodstream, through deep scratches and bite wounds. “Whatever [the doctors] need to do, they’re doing,” said ALL Board trustee and C.W Post professor Joan Digby. “They’ve had to do some surgery, and administer some heavy …

Yes, Patch has really kept up with this story. Even Cablevision News 12 dropped the ball. After an initial report they never did a followup. I am waiting for ADA Jed Painter to release some details to the media on the motive for the caging of these cats at the Preserve. It's still a mystery why someone would do this.   more ›

ALL to Host Annual Fundraiser at Swan Club

The event takes on a greater sense of urgency this year.

While always a significant event in generating revenue for Glen Cove Animal Lovers League (ALL), their 17th annual fundraiser is taking on a greater sense of urgency this year. “The Animal Lovers have endured the most stressful year on record, due to a 40 percent increase in the number of pets being surrendered,” said Director Joan Phillips. “It’s due to the economy and those needing help with spaying and neutering of un-owned feral cats. We are hoping to raise enough money to be able to continue our outreach programs for pets and the community.” The fundraiser will take place at the Swan Club in Glenwood Landing on Thursday, Oct. 27, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Tickets are $80 per person and include buffet dinner, open bar and raffle prizes. This…

Shelter Animal of the Week: Topaz

This week’s featured shelter animal is one gem of a cat.

Topaz is a teenage Domestic Short Hair/Tortoiseshell (Tortie) cat who was one of 100 animals rescued from a Glen Cove home in April. The Glen Cove Animal Shelter has been caring for the animals in the interim until they are all adopted. Many of the teenage and adult rescued cats, like Topaz, have “come around big time,” according to shelter staff. Now, they are more tolerant of humans and their shelter surroundings, whereas before, they had been much too frightened.  Being a Tortie cat, Topaz has a very intriguing coat. It is dark brown with speckles of beige and bright orange (hence, her name). She has a medium build, and long white whiskers.  Topaz is truly a ‘gem of a cat.’ She is not only obedient - as she sits perfectly during a photo…

Shelter Animals of the Week: Triscuit and Nabisco

Triscuit and Nabisco are two adoptable kittens who are “deliciously” irresistible.

Triscuit and Nabisco are two, precious Domestic Short Hair kittens who are in desperate need of a loving new home. These playful siblings are new arrivals to the Glen Cove Animal Shelter. They were recently dropped-off, along with their mom, and put up for adoption. Although skittish at times from the sudden change in their lives, this dynamic duo is very playful and sweet. They get along very well with one another; their interactions are irresistible to watch. Although similar-looking, they each have unique markings and colors. In addition to a striped, light-brown/beige coat, Triscuit has a patch of white fur just above her nose and Nabisco’s body is lighter in color. Their delicious names, combined with such endearing personalities, …

Shelter Animal of the Week: Daisy

Daisy's delightful nature and curiosity is simply irresistible.

Daisy is one of many adorable teenage Domestic Short Hair cats currently available for adoption at the Glen Cove Animal Shelter. Not to be confused with Princess Daisy (who has quite a big personality), Daisy is a little more subdued. However, she always seems to make an appearance over the course of each shelter visit, as if she whole-heartedly wants to be noticed. Usually, she slinks around close by and observes. Daisy is as sweet as her name, and gets along well with other cats due to her pleasant nature. She has a medium build with a black and white coat, surplus of white whiskers and an amazing set of light green eyes. This patient girl awaits a loving family that will appreciate her delightful personality. Hopefully on a visit in the…

Shelter Animal of the Week: Bronte

Find out why Glen Cove Animal Shelter’s Bronte is their most well-known cat.

Bronte is an adult Domestic Short Hair-White mix, and quite the celebrity at the Glen Cove Animal Shelter. Named after the English poet and novelist, Bronte is a sassy and lovable beauty. Because she is deaf, she has a very distinct meow: one that is both memorable and endearing. This particular feline enjoys finding comfort in some of the most unexpected places around the shelter, such as the white linen closet (where she blends in and becomes impossible to find due to her light-colored coat) or the washing machine. She always seems to know when food is about to be served, as well. Heightened senses, perhaps? Bronte has a medium build with a beautiful, soft, all-white coat and dark green eyes. She awaits a person or family to fall in love…

I just paid $22.87 for an iPad2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow byUPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $675 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, http://BuzzSave.com   more ›

Shelter Animal of the Week: Kitty

Do not be fooled by the name; this cat is anything but ordinary.

Kitty is an adult domestic short hair/black mix with a lot of love to give. With such an approachable, friendly attitude, it’s no wonder she’s one of the staff’s favorite animals at the Glen Cove Animal Shelter. Unlike energetic Nika – who was featured last week – Kitty is calm, collected and highly affectionate. She has a medium build, with a shimmering black coat and bright green eyes. Although Kitty enjoys a nice, long rub on the head and back, she values her nap time. She is a laid back girl, and would make for a great companion to laze around the house with. Kitty is also up-to-date with her vaccinations, house-trained and spayed. If you are interested in adopting Kitty, or any other cats or dogs from the Glen Cove Animal Shelter, …
