City Officials Meet With Business Owners To Explain Parking Fee

Business owners and Glen Cove Downtown Improvement District members attended an informational session Monday.

"We're not looking to charge businesses for parking for the sake of parking," mayor Ralph Suozzi explained Monday during an informational session at City Hall on the city's proposed parking fees for new businesses.   Several business owners from the downtown district were present at Monday's forum. One businesswoman asked whether the fees would discourage business startup in Glen Cove's central business district. "Parking is what brings people downtown. It may be for the summer concerts and dinner, it may be the doctor and Starbucks - this is part of a plan for strategic growth in the coming years," he said. The one-time fees for new businesses were explained to apply mostly to special use applicants - businesses which deviate from the …

First of all Jack's Shack in in Glen Head and not in Glen Cove and it has been open for well over a month, mayby two. It was closed temporarily to comply with the TOB rules relative to a CO or a similar issue. That was resolved. Glen Cove parking is irrelevant to that business.   more ›

Glen Cove To Implement Parking Fee for New Downtown Businesses

Zoning provision would not affect existing businesses or those requiring less than five additional spaces.

A new parking fee for businesses moving into the city’s downtown shopping district would only affect mid- to large-sized stores and restaurants, said Mayor Ralph Suozzi  at Tuesday’s city council meeting. “The parking structures are a great asset to us, but they require upkeep,” Suozzi said over the phone Wednesday. He said the fee would be a one-time charge affecting only new businesses that would require additional parking spaces than their sites had previously. Max Stach, city planner with the Turner Miller Group, LLC, addressed the council Tuesday as to the details of the Payment in Lieu of Parking (PILOP), saying that since the provision was formulated in August 2010, only three business applications brought to the planning board …

City officials really don't have the authority to directly deal with illegal immigration, but I did talk about combating illegal housing (in fact I wrote a blog on Patch about it) and enforcing so-called "quality of life" laws to clean up downtown. I had and have a lot of ideas in this area. As a result, Ralph Suozzi has publicly called me (actually he called all the Republican candidates …   more ›

Planning Board Delays Carney Street Apartments Decision

Board delays vote on 52-unit apartment complex until comments are received from Nassau County.

The proposed 52-unit apartment complex to be built on Carney Street was the hot topic of discussion at Tuesday’s Glen Cove Planning Board Meeting. Jim O’Grady, architect and representative of the applicant, 200 Carney Street Corporation, said he would prefer to receive comments from the Nassau County Planning Commission on the project before the Board proceeds with a motion. "It could be that the commission met the day before Veteran's Day," he said. "Therefore, I don't think it's appropriate to hold a public hearing on the project." The Board agreed, and moved to postpone public discussion on the apartment complex until the County's comments are received. Project managers announced at a previous meeting that the site plan had increased by…

According to Frank's best ideas, we should let anybody with money come into this city and give him carte blanche to invest and make a profit. Is that what most people think should happen. What Frank suggests is just a dressed up version of anarchy. It's just at the extreme other end of central planning.   more ›

VIDEO: Planning Board Approves Piazza

Board votes 4-3.

After months of community debate, the Glen Cove Planning Board approved the Glen Cove Piazza amid cheers and jeers at Wednesday night’s meeting. The project calls for a $60 million investment into the Village Square, in the heart of downtown Glen Cove, and includes 142 multifamily residential apartments and 27,000 square feet of retail space across four five-story buildings. Following a final public hearing and a brief executive session, board chairman Thomas Scott called a vote on the application. After three votes in approval, and three votes dissenting, Scott broke the gridlock in approval of the piazza. "This applicant has the ability to make this project work," said board member Michael Bellissimo. "One element of the project also is …
