Thousands of gallons of automotive fluids allegedly allowed to seep into ground at salvage yard near Glen Cove Waterway.
A Muttontown man was arrested Monday and charged with 20 felony counts of illegal dumping of hazardous automotive waste at his salvage yard at 4 Park Place in Glen Cove, according to a press release from the Nassau County district attorney's office. John Doxey, 44, is accused of releasing thousands of gallons of toxic automotive fluids into the ground at his business, 4 Park Place Corp., located just south of the Glen Cove Waterway. Doxey and his employees were observed releasing the fluids in the course of stripping and dismantling large commercial vehicles and other heavy machinery at the salvage yard since at least October 2011 when the investigation began, the release stated. Do you believe in this method of combating underage drinking?
Glen Cove was the first municipality in Nassau County to enact a Social Host Law, a measure subsequently adopted countywide in 2007. It is a step that communities throughout the country are taking to fight underage drinking, making it a crime for adults to permit alcohol consumption in the home by anyone under 21. Substance Abuse Free Environment, or SAFE, Inc., is a federally-funded non-profit with offices in Glen Cove's City Hall. The group promotes the law as one of its tools in fighting substance abuse among the city's youth, and at an April 26 town hall meeting cited the fact that it has been used to bring charges in 21 cases since its inception. The most recent was the case of a Glen Cove mother who was arrested after officers …

Residents are invited to bring their unused medications to the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department for safe disposal next week.
Residents with unused or expired prescription medications are encouraged to drop them off at the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday, May 12 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. State Senator Carl Marcellino, a partner in the "Shed the Meds" program, warned about the dangers of letting such substances sit around or disposing of them improperly. "When old medication is just left around the house, there’s a potential for those drugs to be misused by someone else, you just don’t know," Marcellino said in a statement. "However, flushing them down the drain is not the answer because they could work their way into our water system. Here on Long Island we drink the water beneath our feet so we must do all we can to continue to protect that …

Police say they know the identity of the driver and are looking for him.
Two people sustained minor injuries after a car that was fleeing police early this morning crashed in Locust Valley, according to the Glen Cove Police Department. The driver fled on foot and is still being sought. A Glen Cove patrol car first observed the vehicle traveling at an estimated 80 miles per hour in a 30-mile-per-hour zone southbound on Glen Cove Avenue at around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, police said. The suspect vehicle had gained too much distance for the patrol car to pursue by the time the officer had turned onto Glen Cove Avenue, police said, but the speeding car returned 10 minutes later traveling northbound, "blowing past the patrol car" at 80 miles per hour. As he attempted to stop the car, the officer recognized the driver as …

Woman rescued early Thursday morning after falling off pier at Glen Cove Yacht Club.
A woman was rescued early Thursday morning after she fell off of the Glen Cove Yacht Club's pier, according to the Glen Cove Police Department. Bhavana Malhota, 30, of Jericho, told police she had been leaning on a railing while talking on her cell phone when she lost her balance and fell into the water. Not knowing how to swim, she managed to stay afloat by grabbing a buoy floating nearby. That is where rescue workers from the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department, EMS and Glen Cove police found her at 12:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 call from a woman who was with Malhota. Police said Malhota told them she was cold and weak from trying to stay above water, which police estimated was for 20 minutes or so. Responders lowered a nearby dinghy …

Mother of home charged with unlawfully dealing with a child.
Two 14-year-old brothers reported missing last week were found at a house party on Hill Street on Friday night, according to police. Police found "enough 15- and 16-year-olds to fill a classroom," said detective Gerald Williams in a press release. The two missing teens had been reported missing by their father several days before the party, police said. They were found inside the house, and police determined that one required medical attention for excessive intoxication. He was taken to Glen Cove Hospital. Police said they found beer, liquor and marijuana in the house. The parents of each teen in attendence were called to pick up their children. Margaret Shencavitz, 44, the mother of the 14-year-old boy who threw the party, was charged …
