Connolly Fourth-Graders Visit City Hall

Kids get a question and answer session with the mayor.

Fourth-graders in Valerie Scicchitano and Erin O'Beirne's Connolly Elementary School class met mayor Ralph Suozzi this week and were given a tour of the 100-year-old City Hall. The students got to ask Suozzi a list of prepared questions and talk about some concerns. They heard from him on some of the projects he is overseeing in Glen Cove, including the addition of new playgrounds in the city's parks. Suozzi encouraged the students to help preserve their community's beauty, talking to them about clean water and the environment. The class will use pictures they took of the visit in an iMovie they are putting together on the city's history.

Glen Cove Ave. Cameras Record License Plates Only, Chief Says

New fixture supplied by federal grant for surveillance equipment filed by mayor three years ago.

The new cameras discussed at the city’s council meeting on Monday are devices which read license plates as vehicles pass, then send the information to a central database to be stored, according to Glen Cove chief of police William Whitton. “They are a form of camera, but they don’t take any other image than the license plate,” Whitton said. License plate readers are used across the country and heavily in New York City, especially at bridges and tunnels, said Whitton. Their function is to record and store all plate numbers of vehicles which pass by in order to provide authorities with “one extra avenue to pursue” in the event of a serious crime in the area. Whitton used the example of a bank robbery in Glen Cove. If a witness provides a …

So this one vehicle will make keen a security state? Such paranoia. How did police work get done? The same way as now, but times change and policing changes also. I guess you are suggesting that police shouldnt advance with technology ? Pretty dangerous suggestion. Your argument doesn't hold weight with me   more ›

Couple Renews Vows on Eve of 68th Anniversary

Mayor conducts Valentine's Day ceremony for Anthony and Gloria Panaro.

Glen Cove mayor Ralph Suozzi made a special Valentine's Day visit to the assisted living center at Atria Glen Cove yesterday to personally conduct a renewal of vows ceremony for a couple approaching their eighty-sixth year of marriage. "It's not every day that a mayor of any city comes to your place to do something like that," said Anthony Panaro, who will celebrate his anniversary with his wife, Gloria, on Feb. 20. The Panaros each donned red for the occasion and enjoyed a toast to their decades of happiness, which to date have produced two sons and two daughters, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Anthony still remembers the dance where he met Gloria on August 28, 1940. He and some friends had formed a club and were holding…

New Police Camera Placement Discussed at City Council

Highlights from Tuesday night's meeting.

Glen Cove resident Charles Bozzello approached the podium at last night's city council meeting to question the placement of a new camera fixture on Glen Cove Avenue. "It concerns me that there was no announcement or prior notice about this. They kind of just popped up," he said. The camera fixture, which features two cameras directed to both the north and south lanes, was revealed to be owned by the Glen Cove Police Department, and is equipped with license plate reading capabilities. Mayor Ralph Suozzi said he was not aware of the specific cameras, though he said he is continuing to push for a U.S. Department of Justice grant which would fund camera surveillance in the city's parking garages. He also said that the camera systems could …

This man is a fake and a fraud. He submitted plans to the town one way and then opened up with a different layout. Blaming everything on the town when in fact he did not pay his electrician for the balance of the work $3000.00, nor the plumber’s inspection fee to the town, therefore a final inspection was never done. The town closed him down for not having a Certificate of Occupancy. This was …   more ›

PHOTOS: Annual Chip-A-Tree Recycling Program

Glen Cove residents participate in an annual tradition.

The Glen Cove Beautification Commision, Mayor Ralph Suozzi, the Department of Public Works and participating residents were out early Saturday morning for the annual Chip-A-Tree recycling program at Morgan Park. Chip-A-Tree, which runs from 9 a.m. to noon each year on the Saturday following New Year's, is an opportunity for residents to dispose of their Christmas trees in an eco-friendly fashion. This year, over 140 trees were brought to be recycled. They will avoid the landfill, and go to composts to be eventually used as mulch. The event is one which links generations, especially for Mayor Suozzi, whose two sons volunteered during this year's program. "My father started the Beautification Commission," said Suozzi, who also pointed out …

VIDEO: Mayor, City Council Inaugurated at Ceremony

Mayor Ralph Suozzi became one of four in Glen Cove's history to achieve a fourth term.

Glen Cove mayor and city council members were inaugurated before a packed City Hall Monday. It was a historic moment for Mayor Ralph Suozzi, as he became one of only four mayors in the city's history to achieve a fourth term. "We still have work to be done," Suozzi said. "We still have a $56 million debt, down from $71 million, and we need to help preserve a quality of life, and a viable economic climate for our businesses. We must work hard, we must work smart, but most importantly, we must work together." The process, however, was a first for incoming Republican Councilmen Anthony Gallo and Reginald Spinello, and it was a familiar one to returning Democratic Councilmen Nicholas DiLeo, Michael Famiglietti, Timothy Tenke and Anthony …
