City Dedicates Road to Martin Luther King, Jr.

The City of Glen Cove held a ceremony to dedicate Bridge Street as "Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way" on Saturday.

Local residents gathered in front of the Glen Cove Police Department Saturday to rededicate Bridge Street as "Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way." Mayor Ralph Suozzi led the ceremony, honoring the late Civil Rights leader: “Bridge Street is special because our police department stands on it; it is a 'bridge' between the middle school and the First Baptist Church," said Suozzi, on his choice to re-name the downtown Glen Cove road. R&B star Ashanti, who is a former Glen Cove resident, made a special appearance at the dedication, along with her family. Assemb. VIDEO: Glen Cove Cleans Up After Irene

Glen Cove works to restore normalcy after Sunday morning's hurricane.

Hurricane Irene ravaged the eastern coast through Sunday morning, and Glen Cove was no exception. The storm caused damage at several Glen Cove homes, and according the Long Island Power Authority, has caused the largest number of power outages in over 20 years. LIPA says it has begun working to restore power to the thousands affected. lmost 3,000 Glen Cove homes are affected by power outages, according to the LIPA site at 7 p.  LIPA also says it is too early to estimate when power will fully be restored to the region, as it must also survey the full extent of damage. City Considers Shared Police with Sea Cliff

Highlights from Tuesday's Glen Cove City Council meeting.

At Tuesday's Glen Cove City Council meeting, resident and 2011 mayoral candidate Paul Meli brought up the rumor that Glen Cove and Sea Cliff executives have pursued a shared-service agreeement.   Meli inquired about the nature of the service in question, and after Mayor Ralph Suozzi said he could not discuss the matter, the mayor announced the service was police. Meli cited a May 2 resolution from the Sea Cliff Village Board authorizing a contract for a feasibility study as to how the agreement could work. After the meeting, Mayor Bruce Kennedy of Sea Cliff said the agreement would benefit both sides.   "I think it's a great idea," said Kennedy.  "If we get increased service for a price lower than we're paying [Nassau County] now, and if …
