Young Residents Turn to Biking

Several Glen Covers say they save money by biking over driving.

Long Island native and business owner John Skvarla just moved back into his parents’ Sea Cliff home, and says there’s been one way he’s saved money: biking. Skvarla, 35, studied Liberal Arts at Nassau Community College and now runs a graphic design company; and he says biking is an affordable alternative to driving. “With a car, you have insanely high gas prices, the cost to register and insure the car and upkeep it,” he said. Skvarla said there are limitations that come with biking. “If I wasn’t living at my parents house right now, I probably would not be able to afford to live around here,” he said. “When I lived in Austin, it was a lot easier to bicycle around the city; it was a very bicycle friendly city. Gribbin Elementary Holds Fall Festival

Students participated in fall-fun activities on school's front lawn.

Gribbin Elementary School students recently celebrated their annual Harvest Festival on the school's front lawn.  Students and teachers participated in a variety of autumn activities that encouraged physical education and coordination. A potato sack race, scarecrow stuffing, and an obstacle course were among the day's events. Members of the New York Institute of Technology Men's' Basketball team volunteered their time to help coordinate the activities with physical education teachers Mark Checola and Chris MacDonald.

PTA Council Honors Laurent Caballero

Glen Cove parents and teachers recognize longtime volunteer while hosting annual Community Scholarship Fundraiser.

With more than 150 district parents, staff, family and distinguished guests in attendance, the Glen Cove Council of Parent Teacher Associations hosted its annual Community Scholarship Fundraiser on March 14 at the New York Institute of Technology's de Seversky Mansion of Old Westbury.  Laurent Caballero, the district's kindergarten through second grade teacher's aide, was this year's honoree during the Sunday Brunch event.   "Today we recognize a woman with deep devotion to her community," said Mayor Ralph Suozzi. "Laurent has committed her life to volunteering, serving the children and families of Glen Cove."
