VIDEO: City Celebrates Hanukkah in Village Square

The Glen Cove Jewish community celebrated its 10th annual Menorah Lighting in Village Square Tuesday.

The Glen Cove Jewish community celebrated the first evening of Hanukkah during its 10th annual Menorah Lighting in Village Square Tuesday. Rabbi Mendy Heber of Chabad of Brookville and Glen Cove led the ceremony, which was headlined by Mayor Ralph Suozzi, who illumintated the Shamosh, and Assemblyman Charles Lavine's lighting of the first candle. "It's a beautiful celebration," said Heber. "The concept behind celebrating this way is that we're able to practice our religion openly, and the light signifies spirituality." He also discussed the history of the Jewish holiday, and explained why the "Festival of Lights" is observed by lighting the Menorah. "It goes back many years to the time when Jews were at the temple of Jerusalem and the …

Glen Cove Shows Its Holiday Cheer at Winter Festival

Residents enjoy carriage rides and other festivities, as well as the annual tree lighting, in downtown Glen Cove on Saturday.

To kick-off the holiday season, the Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) hosted the annual Winter Festival and Tree Lighting in Village Square Saturday, where residents could enjoy a number of festivities. There were horse carriage rides, carols playing over the loud speaker, free hot chocolate and a photo opportunity with Santa for the children. “I really enjoy the music, and my kids love seeing Santa,” said resident Chimere Thompson, who has been coming to the festival with her two daughters for four years. “A lot of parents don't have the opportunity or time to bring their kids to the mall to see Santa, or to [Rockefeller Center] to see the tree. The festival gives us more access.” Some learned of the event through …

VIDEO: Planning Board Approves Piazza

Board votes 4-3.

After months of community debate, the Glen Cove Planning Board approved the Glen Cove Piazza amid cheers and jeers at Wednesday night’s meeting. The project calls for a $60 million investment into the Village Square, in the heart of downtown Glen Cove, and includes 142 multifamily residential apartments and 27,000 square feet of retail space across four five-story buildings. Following a final public hearing and a brief executive session, board chairman Thomas Scott called a vote on the application. After three votes in approval, and three votes dissenting, Scott broke the gridlock in approval of the piazza. "This applicant has the ability to make this project work," said board member Michael Bellissimo. "One element of the project also is …

Glen Cove Celebrates Sixth Annual Blessing of the Creche

St. Patrick's clergy joined in Christmas carols, as they blessed the Nativity scene in the Village Square on Friday night.

The official blessing of the creche in the Village Square attracted a big turnout Friday night. As a light snowfall set a festive atmosphere, the young voices of the St. Patrick's Children's Choir led the crowd in carols and parochial hymns, including "O Come All Ye Faithful," and "Soon and Very Soon." Sgt. Jack McDougal of the Glen Cove Police Department had the honor of welcoming everybody to the sixth annual event. "Tonight we continue a tradition that started six Christmases ago," said McDougal. "To come together for one evening, putting aside our commitments, parties, and shopping to remember the reason for the holiday season." A version of "Silent Night–" sung in alternation between the English and Spanish languages–began as Father …

Halloween Parade Brings out Angels, Witches and Dragons

Residents paraded through the streets of Glen Cove, collecting candy from local businesses.

A swirling eddy of a breeze elevated a quartet of brown and wrinkled maple leaves into a ghostly dance as a pint-sized witch clutched her bag of goodies in one hand and her mother's hand in the other. The mother, also dressed as a witch, a near marco copy of her daughter, black pointy hat and all, guided the girl up School Street for the next store stop and some more candy for the tote sack.  Across the street a bunny hopped, a jester danced and an astronaut glided along as they continued their zigzag course down the block, not missing a store along the route.  So it went on a chilly, breeze-swept, albeit sunny Saturday afternoon at this year's edition of the annual Halloween parade in the heart of the city, emanating from the Village …

City's Farmers' Market Set to Begin its Third Season

Local harvesters, producers and artisans will be selling the fruits of their own labor to shoppers in Glen Cove's Village Square starting on June 6.

In an introduction to a book on America and agriculture, journalist Michael Pollan, the closest thing to a superstar a genre like agricultural writing will probably ever get, wrote tangentially that "... farmers' markets are popping up like mushrooms." On June 6, from 7 a.m. until noon, one of these many markets will be stationed in Village Square in Glen Cove, just behind the Glen Cove Public Library. It will be the first one of a series that will take place there every Sunday until Nov. 21. The list of vendors includes Rick's Baked Goods, Gajeski Produce, Guyank Brand and Martha's Seafood as well as a couple who will be selling smoothies made from fresh fruit. Only products that they "bake, make, grow or catch" are allowed, according to …
