City Considers Shared Police with Sea Cliff

Highlights from Tuesday's Glen Cove City Council meeting.

At Tuesday's Glen Cove City Council meeting, resident and 2011 mayoral candidate Paul Meli brought up the rumor that Glen Cove and Sea Cliff executives have pursued a shared-service agreeement.   Meli inquired about the nature of the service in question, and after Mayor Ralph Suozzi said he could not discuss the matter, the mayor announced the service was police. Meli cited a May 2 resolution from the Sea Cliff Village Board authorizing a contract for a feasibility study as to how the agreement could work. After the meeting, Mayor Bruce Kennedy of Sea Cliff said the agreement would benefit both sides.   "I think it's a great idea," said Kennedy.  "If we get increased service for a price lower than we're paying [Nassau County] now, and if …

Virginia Quake Felt in Glen Cove

Residents share stories of their whereabouts when shocks from a Virginia area earthquake reached Long Island Tuesday afternoon.

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake, with an epicenter in Virginia, shook Long Island Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Tremors could be felt throughout much of the Northeast, said officials, including the city of Glen Cove. Employees of L. Martone & Sons, Inc., a roofing and sheet metal business located on Sea Cliff Avenue, evacuated the building for several minutes. “I immediately knew what it was,” said one worker about the quake. “I was in the 8.8 [magnitude] Mexico City earthquake in 1985. Once you’re in an earthquake, you never forget how it feels.” Another employee said she immediately called her son, who was at the beach, and advised him to leave.
