Times: Waterfront Project Has ‘Mass Appeal’

The 860-unit Glen Isle received mention in the New York Times' Thursday editions.

The New York Times acknowledged Glen Isle in its Thursday editions for being one of several projects with “mass appeal” on Long Island. Plans for the 860-unit project - which have been on the drawing board in Glen Cove since 2003 - got the green light last month. Now, Glen Isle could potentially be "shovel-ready" in the fourth quarter of 2012, according to Donald Monti, managing partner with RXR Glen Isle Partners, the developer. Glen Cove Patch's most recent waterfront coverage included the project’s permit and SEQRA findings approval in December.

Glen Cove Parks: A Hot Topic at Town Hall

Parks were the centerpiece of discussion at Wednesday’s Town Hall meeting, hosted by Mayor Ralph Suozzi and the City of Glen Cove at Connolly Elementary School. Several residents showed interest in the future of recreational parks, such as Big Ralph Park. “We’re trying to repurpose [our parks] for something bigger, which would bring a lot of traffic to those neighborhoods.” said Suozzi. “Someday, we’ll need [Big Ralph] park again. We don’t want to give up that open land.” Suozzi explained the city’s debt is preventing the restoration of neighborhood parks. “Since 2007, we cut $15 million worth of debt, and one way that pays off is next year, we’re paying three-quarters of a million less in debt service. So we’re trying to get the expenses …

VIDEO: Residents Sound Off on Waterfront Project

Residents spoke for and against the Waterfront project at Tuesday's Planning Board hearing.

An overwhelming amount of residents appeared at a public hearing on the Waterfront Project at City Hall Tuesday. In terms of redevelopment, the crowd appeared to be split down the middle. While some pushed for the project to move forward, others, such as resident Charlie Bozzello, wanted planning to come to an immediate halt. "One of the driving factors of people leaving the city is that we once had an economic balance between industrial and residential for centuries," he said. "We've lost our businesses, and our taxes are going up...Once this project rolls down the track, there's no possible retreat." The $1 billion project proposed by RXR Glen Isle Partners, LLC, includes 860 housing units, a hotel and conference center, offices, 25,000 …

Government planning rarely (ever?) works. The people running government rarely have private sector experience. Most of what they know is from classrooms, and that's not like learning things in the "trenches". The few that do have private sector experience were lawyers or accountants, and that's a bit removed from operating a business too, and business is the key. Business is where the jobs are, …   more ›
