Glen Head resident Chuck Van Horn leads watercolor painting workshop in the Glen Cove Spring Adult Education Program.

Besides teaching watercolor at the State University at Farmingdale, award-winning artist and Glen Head resident Chuck Van Horn is is part of the Glen Cove Continuing Education Program with his eight-session workshop, "Mastering the Watercolor Technique." Van Horn covered the process of presenting and preserving finished works with matting and framing during Monday night's class at Glen Cove High School. Weekly, he covers various water techniques and critiques student work. Van Horn said that he primarily teaches beginning-level students the fundamentals of watercolor from creating the perfect wash to achieve the illusion of distance and three dimensional objects.

Petco of Glen Cove lends their grooming facilities to prepare 17 pups saved by Yorkie911 Rescue for adoption.

Seventeen rescued dogs got their day at the Spa on Tuesday, as Petco in Glen Cove opened up its grooming facilities to the Yorkie911 Rescue organization. With the ultimate goal of finding pups loving homes, Yorkie911 Rescue is an organization of volunteers dedicated to saving Yorkie Terriers and other toy breeds from the cruelty and neglect of puppy mills.  After a quick ear and heartworm check by veterinarian Dr. Danielle Hammer, the pups were groomed by Jacquelyn DeProspo and Jackie Mennella of Friendly Paws Mobile Pet Grooming. Glen Cove Adult Education students learn the art of ballroom and social dancing.

No more pencils; no more books; just dancing. Glen Cove adult students learn the art of social and ballroom dancing through one of the courses offered by the local adult education program. Professional dance instructor Richard Fiore guides adults with a mixture of dance experience. His goal is to help students build a "toolbox of techniques" that can be applied to any dance they wish to learn after taking the course.  Each week, Fiore introduces two categories of dance: a smooth dance and a rhythm dance. Fiore said he believes the class should be as joyful an experience as the expression of dance.   There are four classes left in the spring semester on Tuesdays from 7:30-9:30 p.m. in the lower gym at Finley Middle School. Jewelry makers from beginner to experienced from Nassau, Suffolk and Queens attend the workshop instructed by Kathleen DiResta.

The Jewelry Workshop at Garvies Point Museum runs 10 lesson sessions for each season of the year. The class is mixed with beginner and experienced jewelry makers, with projects ranging for the beginners and assistance to the experienced with their original creations. Every week techniques like sawing, soldering, forming and texturing are covered. The workshop is fully equipped with the necessary tools including polishers, torches, and a rolling mill.

Grand opening party for the new home of the Meta-Burn personal training and nutritional coaching programs.

Breakthroughs to Fitness celebrated its grand opening with clients, local business people, family and friends. Guests enjoyed food from the Sweet Tomato and were shown a video with an overview of the Meta-Burn Program and testimonials from their clients. There were also tours of the Meta-Burn Training Center where they could see the workout equipment used as well as the "Breakthrough Wall" with clients' success stories. The "Inspiration Mural" across one wall has images and quotes from the many people that inspire owner/president Rahsheen Slaughter from Martin Luther King to Mother Theresa, Michael Jordan to Lou Ferrigno.

Glen Cove Senior Class shows off local stores' latest fashions at the High School.

Friday, Feb. 4 marked the 2011 edition of the Glen Cove High School's annual Senior Fashion Show. The latest fashions from the stores Estelle's, Charm Furs, Victor Talbots, Lesters, S&S Tuxedos, Sundown, J. Mclaughlin, Simply 4 U, and 2 B Seen were put on display in front of a packed auditorium. Senior adviser Jason Bieder said the purpose of the night's fashion show was to exemplify that the 2011 Seniors could "shine - no matter what the situation."

Local children gathered at the Glen Cove Public Library on Tuesday for the weekly Mother Goose Story Time.

Mother Goose Story Time is a weekly participatory program that introduces 18-30-month-old children to the Glen Cove Public Library with one-half hour of nursery rhymes, finger plays, music and short storybooks.  The program concludes with an arts and crafts activity geared towards the season or nearing holiday. This past Tuesday children created their own Valentines. Mother Goose Story Time is held on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 a.m. Registration required, no fee.
