Bio:

Charleen Famiglietti moved from the small town of Seaford to Smithtown in 10th grade. It was during her time as a writer for Smithtown High School's Bull's Eye (back when it was one school), that her interest in journalism was first sparked. By her senior year, she was an editor and even found herself accepting a Newsday Journalism Award.

She attended Binghamton University, and despite her intentions to major in Journalism (Binghamton does not offer the program, but who could pass up that state tuition), she majored in Creative Writing. She got her journalism fix by spending a year blogging for CollegeOTR.com—covering all things Binghamton. She graduated Cum Laude in 2010, having received two prestigious fiction writing awards along the way.

During the summer of 2009, Charleen juggled two unpaid editorial internships at The Long Islander Newspaper and Rosalie Ink Publications. She spent her weekends doing administrative work at a small accounting office. She worked all summer—writing, researching, interviewing, reporting, editing, fact checking, and even filing taxes. She set aside the final two weeks of August for a backpacking excursion across Europe. It was during this trip—somewhere between Iceland and Stockholm—that she realized her three passions: writing, food and writing about food. It was also here that she discovered her fondness for all things Swedish.

Charleen recently moved to Glen Cove, and in her spare time (which is virtually nonexistent), she enjoys practicing yoga, coffee dates with O, The Oprah Magazine, watching reruns of Friends, astrology (she is a self-proclaimed stereotypical Virgo), cheese, and wine tasting.

Beliefs

At Patch, we promise always to report the facts as objectively as possible and otherwise adhere to the principles of good journalism. However, we also acknowledge that true impartiality is impossible and human beings have beliefs. So in the spirit of simple honesty, our policy is to encourage our editors to reveal certain key beliefs to the extent they feel comfortable.

This disclosure is not a license for our editors to inject these beliefs into stories or to dictate coverage according to them. In fact, the intent is the opposite: we hope that the knowledge that our beliefs are on the record will force us to be ever mindful to write, report, and edit in a fair, balanced way. And if you, the user, ever think you see evidence that we failed in this mission, we wholeheartedly invite you to let us know.

Politics

How would you describe your political beliefs? I don't have very many political beliefs. Most of my views fall right in the middle of issues. I am a registered independent.

Do you consider yourself religious? No, but I've been to Bible sleep away camp.

Do you identify with a certain religion? My father is Catholic and my mother is Protestant. I was raised Catholic but never really went to church except for holidays.

Local Hot Button Issues

It all depends. The most talked about issue in Glen Cove is high taxes and the waterfront/ferry project. Another major one is school district budget cuts. Parents, students and teachers alike are concerned that important arts and extra-curricular programs will be cut.

Where do you stand on this issue? I was the president of the Media Arts Honor Society in high school and a member of the Creative Spotlight Club, so I understand the need for arts in school and believe those programs are just as crucial as the math and sciences. I mean hey; I haven't done math in 5+ years, and I am doing just fine.

I would like to see the waterfront/ferry project come to fruition. As a new resident to Glen Cove, I would like to see opportunity and attractions for a younger demographic.
