Glen Cove High School student Roselle Cacio recently participated in and completed “Exploring the Sciences and Health Professions,” a distinguished and competitive program that draws students from across the nation.
The weeklong summer science camp, hosted by Adelphi University and Winthrop-University Hospital, is designed to educate high school students who are considering careers in the health, medicine and science professions.
More than 80 high school students applied nationwide, and only 25, including Roselle, were accepted. Some students traveled from as far as Chicago to participate in the program, which concluded in August. Roselle, who is entering the 9th grade in September, was the youngest of the group.

Participants were exposed to in-depth medical studies and the practice of medicine, and traveled from the university to the hospital each day as part of the camp. They learned about research leading to the understanding of human genes, medical imaging technology, including X-ray, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines as well as radiation and medical technology for treating diseases. Students also learned about cancer diagnosis and targeted cancer therapies.
