City Council Vote Preserves Mansion

Zoning change does, however, allow for development of nearly 40 homes.

The Glen Cove City Council voted Tuesday to rezone the Pratt mansion and its property.

The decision allows the developer Montclair Hotels to subdivide the 54.5-acre and build 40 homes. Under this measure, the Glen Cove Mansion would be preserved, as Long Island Business News has reported.

At one point, there were discussions about razing the mansion, but Tuesday’s 4-3 late-night vote prevented that.

Now a hotel and conference center, the mansion was once home to John T. Pratt, whose father Charles Pratt, an oil magnate whose business ultimately became part of Standard Oil.

The mansion was also used in the films “North By Northwest” and “Sabrina.”
