Photos: Big Red Celebrates Homecoming

Glen Cove community spirit shines at Saturday's game against Bethpage.

The Glen Cove community celebrated Homecoming 2013 amidst the traditional fanfare and spirited salutes that make the weekend so special. Leading up to Saturday’s main event, individual schools held respective activities, with students and faculty dressing up in sport-wear or following themes of the day to tie into this festive time of the year.

Students and faculty at Glen Cove High School led off the weekend celebration with the annual Pep Rally in the school gymnasium. On Saturday, students, parents and staff from different schools and school-based organizations participated in the annual Homecoming Parade of floats along Walnut Rd.

Floats from each school truly exemplified this year’s theme of “Kick ‘Em South,” with some floats depicting a Big Red football player kicking the Bethpage Golden Eagle mascot. Gribbin Elementary School’s float took it one step further, displaying a Bethpage Golden Eagle cooking over on a rotisserie, complete with a realistic-looking artificial flame.

Homecoming culminated later that evening with the Big Red varsity football matchup vs. Bethpage under the lights at J.C. Maiden Field. The 2013 Homecoming court was introduced at halftime and a new king and queen were crowned. This year’s Homecoming Queen is Allie Cappiello. The 2013 Homecoming King is Nick Cavallone.

The GCHS band, varsity cheerleaders and kickline also performed during the game. Fans were even treated to a special performance given by the Glen Cove junior football cheerleaders (comprised of students ages 5-14). The junior cheer performed under the direction of the varsity cheerleaders.

Ellen Lynch once again served as coordinator and master of ceremonies of Homecoming. The game was close heading into the third quarter but the Big Red failed to capitalize on good field position from a blocked punt midway through the quarter, and Bethpage came away with the victory. Despite a 28-6 loss, the Big Red remains in the hunt for a playoff spot.
