'Bye Bye Birdie' Hits Morgan Park Stage

Plaza Productions to perform at Sunday's Morgan Park Music Festival.

While it was only during the military draft days where heartbroken fans could gather to see heartthrobs singing idols off to the service, the musical "Bye Bye Birdie" conjures up those feelings of nostalgia.

"Bye Bye Birdie" hits the stage in Glen Cove on Sunday night as Plaza Productions presents the classic Broadway musical as the next installment in the (MPSMF).

“We here at Plaza always look forward to performing at Morgan Park,” said Scott Earle, a spokesperson for Plaza. “The design concept for our version of this classic is bright pastels. Yellow, orange, pink, purple – representing youth, humor and love. What better background could we ask for? As our show begins, the sun will be setting in the distance providing an appropriate background to compliment our fun and vibrant costumes, set, and cast of actors. Not to mention the beautiful columns on the playing space, reminiscent of the Greeks, where theatre began.”

Repeat performers at MPSMF, the cast and staffers at Plaza always feel welcome, according to Earle.

“From the park’s crew to the wonderfully energetic and supportive audiences, and even the laughter of the children playing by the water, it is pure fun,” he said. “What an incredible way to spend a summer night.”

Earle explained that the subject matter of the “Bye Bye Birdie” also plays well with the family experience of the park’s concert series.

“Family is definitely a key theme in this show,” he said. “Bye Bye Birdie is fun, charming, witty, but most of all, it is a family show. At about two hours long, and with no foul language or adult situations, we truly look forward to parents bringing their kids, with their blankets and exposing their young minds to musical theatre.”

The play is under the direction of Kevin Harrington who is also a producer of Plaza Theatrical Productions, along with his wife Phyllis.

Phyllis will be playing the role of Mrs. MacAfee, mother of the young girl, Kim, around whom the story revolves. That role will be played by the Harrington’s daughter, Emma.

The show is free to the public and will begin at 7:30 p.m. Morgan Park is located on Germaine Street at the end of Landing Road.  In the event of rain, the show will be held at St. Patrick’s Parish Hall, on Pearsall Avenue.
