Let's phrase it this way: A driver drove her car into a utility pole. The car did not act of its own accord. This happened on an overcast day (no sun to blame) and without the intervention of any other drivers. In other words, another inattentive driver. My understanding is that she looking down when she struck the pole, and was not seriously injured. She was lucky it was a utility pole and not a human. I hope this is a lesson to her and to all of us to pocket our phones, focus on our driving, and realize that the comfortable cabin in which we cocoon ourselves is really the control center for a 5000-pound hunk of metal and plastic capable of killing another person almost instantly.

As the photogropher who submitted these photos had posted on Facebook, another major accident in as many weeks. The driver is extremely lucky the primary wires did not come down and hit the car. That could easily have been fatal. The worst that happened in this area is my home in Todd Estates lost power for two minutes after the initial hit. It appears that circuit breakers isolated the damage and power came back. I wholeheartedly agree about distracted driving. I bicycle around the area quite a bit and I am amazed at the number of people still using their handheld cellphones despite it being illegal for years. The NCPD could make a small fortune staking out Glen Cove Avenue by four corners when the high school lets out. Just about everyone driving through that intersection at that time is on their cellphone.

I am glad the driver and everyone around the accident was ok. I arrived right after the accident happen. She did hit a transformer box pole, so she was very lucky it did not explode. There were many people standing around after the accident, and a poor dog was not so lucky and was struck by a car during the chaos and did not survive. :(
