Lavine Seeks Support for Public Financing of Elections

This week in the City of Glen Cove.

New York State Assemblyman Charles Lavine, D - Glen Cove, joined Citizen Action of New York – a good government advocacy group that promotes cleaner and fairer elections – at a press conference to gain support for public financing of elections.

One year after the U.S Supreme Court ruled pragmatic campaign finance laws unconstitutional, New York could potentially become the first state to allow $100,000 plus contributions to political committees.

Because of a formula tied to the consumer price index, New York's contribution limits will be raised for the next campaign cycle. These new limits will allow for even more special interest money to pollute the political process, according to Lavine.

"Extraordinarily well financed special interests, whose narrow agendas are far too often adverse to the well-being of the people of our state, will continue to exert undue and detrimental influence until such time as we can finally adopt a statewide system of public financing of elections," said Lavine.
