Two Art Contest Finalists Named at Boys and Girls Club

Kiara Pittman, 13, and Edward Abarca, 8, will have their pieces advance to the national round.

Two young members of Glen Cove’s Boys and Girls Club won for their region in an art contest involving more than 4,000 clubs nationwide, the club announced this week.

Kiana Pittman, 13, and Edward Abarca, 8, were chosen as Northeast Regional Winners for their submissions to the National Fine Arts Exhibit Program, an initiative the club said is intended to encourage creativity and artistic and cultural enrichment.

“Edward and Kiana put forth genuine effort towards their pieces,” said the club’s arts instructor, Sean O’Callaghan. “Everyone who participated worked so hard – I can’t wait to see what they create next.”

Pittman created a collage, while Abarca’s piece was mixed media. The pieces will be sent for judging at the national level at the organization’s headquarters in Atlanta.

A total of 37 finalists will be chosen and will have their work displayed at special events throughout the year, the club said.
